It was the second time in a week an alligator had been spotted swimming near the shore on the Texas coast. ABC 13 reported that Sylvan Beach had their own alligator sighting a few days prior, causing the beach to be blocked off. In some cases, alligators making their way to the ocean is mere chance. But in these cases, wildlife officials say that the recent flooding might be to blame.

Harvey said that while reports of alligators sightings are more common in the spring and summer months, it's usually near alligators' natural habitats of freshwater lakes and rivers.

Occasionally, they're spotted in brackish water marshes near barrier islands, he said, but not in the Gulf surf. However, despite the recent flooding and continued high water levels in the rivers, Harvey said that beachgoers need not be concerned about the recurrence of these reptiles along the shore.
